Background / introduction
Mechanical ventilation is a life-saving technique but can also cause harm. Ventilator induced lung injury (VILI) describes the damage mechanical ventilation causes. Many studies have been performed to limit the VILI as much as possible. On the pediatric intensive care unit in the UMCG we have multiple research subjects to gain knowledge about prevention of VILI. We try to ventilate as natural as possible to do less harm to the young patient. Although we try to do this, we have proven that patient-ventilator asynchrony is extremely common. Therefore we perform multiple studies to limit the patient-ventilator asynchrony on the pediatric intensive care unit in the UMCG. For these studies we are continuously looking for students to help in the studies.
Research question / problem definition
multiple research questions related to ventilator asynchrony are already formulated: 1. What is the best way to determine patient-ventilator asynchrony in a pediatric patient? 2. What are the effects of patient-ventilator asynchrony in the pediatric patient? 3. How can we improve the ventilator management to prevent patient-ventilator asynchrony in the pediatric patient?
Workplan
The student can participate in the research project of a PhD-candidate or can start their own study (with our help). The aim of the project is to do/ help with the inclusion of patients, obtaining and analyzing the data and eventually the writing of a scientific report. The project will be performed at the pediatric intensive care unit of the Beatrix Children Hospital of the UMCG. The detailed workplan will be determined and discussed together with the student.
