Measuring symptoms and disability in hand/wrist disorders

Keywords:
questionnaire upper extremity Outcome measurement

Researchers:
prof. dr. C.K. van der Sluis
drs. R.J. Berduszek
prof. dr. M.F. Reneman

Nature of the research:
Investigating measurement properties of Dutch language versions of three questionnaires to assess pain and disability in patients with upper extremity problems. These questionnaires are the Shortened version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) Outcome Measure (QuickDASH), the Patient rated wrist/hand evaluation (PRWHE) and the Hand Function Sort (HFS).

Fields of study:
rehabilitation

Background / introduction
Upper limb disorders frequently occur and cause symptoms and disability. Several questionnaires to assess symptoms and disability in patients with upper extremity problems are available (1). Measurement properties of those questionnaires have not been properly assessed in (Dutch) patients with (non)specific complaints of the hand or wrist.
Research question / problem definition
To gain insight into the measurement properties of three questionnaires (QuickDASH, PRWHE and HFS), specifically internal consistency, responsiveness and floor and ceiling effects. Recommendations made by the COSMIN group for the evaluation of measurement properties of health status measurement instruments are followed (2,3).
Workplan
Participants are being recruited from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of the University Medical Center Groningen and from seven external hand therapy clinics in the province of Groningen. Activities may include supporting participant inclusion, data collection, data entry and analysis. Work is carried out both ‘on site’ and in the office.
