Background / introduction
Mechanical ventilation is a life-saving technique but can also cause harm. Ventilator induced lung injury (VILI) describes the damage mechanical ventilation causes. The lung protective ventilating strategy includes small tidal volumes (5-7mL/kg), adequate level of PEEP and limiting the peak inspiratory pressure and plateau pressure. In the pediatric intensive care unit of the UMCG we can use a different kind of ventilation: high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV). HFOV makes it possible to ventilate with very small tidal volumes without giving very high level of pressures. Therefore HFOV is an escape method in the very ill patient and can prevent VILI in this patient category. HFOV is not proven and used in the adult patient, but in the pediatric patient a lot of research still needs to be performed. The PICU of the UMCG is one of the participating centers in worldwide studies on this topic.
Research question / problem definition
multiple research questions related to HFOV are already formulated, but new ones can be formulated together with the student.
Workplan
The student can participate in the research project of a PhD-candidate or can start their own project with our help. The aim of the project is to do/ help with the inclusion of patients, obtaining and analyzing the data and eventually the writing of a scientific report. The project will be performed at the pediatric intensive care unit of the Beatrix Children Hospital of the UMCG. The detailed workplan will be determined and discussed together with the student.
