Nature of the research:
Epidemiological research to investigate safety and feasibility of pre-hospital risk stratification in suspected myocardial infarction

Fields of study:
GP medicine laboratory medicine cardiology

Background / introduction
The Famous Triage project started in 2012 and last year the third implementation phase of this project was started. Aim of this research is to investigate the implementation of a standardized pre-hospital triaging system for chest pain patients.
In this initiative, there is an important collaboration among ambulance nurses, cardiologists, general practitioners and the clinical chemistry department. This standardized pre-hospital triage system has the potential to be scaled up to every ambulance service in The Netherlands and to become implemented in Dutch ambulance guidelines. Moreover, this project could be implemented in countries with the same pre-hospital ambulance procedures.
Research question / problem definition
In this research project we aim to answer te following research questions:
- Is pre-hospital risk assessment with subsequent treatment decisions by paramedics feasible
- Is pre-hospital risk assessment by paramedics safe in terms of major adverse cardiac events
- How can pre-hospital risk assessment be optimized
Workplan
- Working multidisciplinary with ambulance, clinical chemical lab and cardiology researchers lead by cardiology research department.
- Learning to adjudicate ACS determined by ECG asessment, laboratory assessment and European and American guidelines
- Follow up of diagnostics and therapy started by the general practitioner in low-risk patients
- Learning statistics to determine associations with low-risk and high-risk patients and determining safety of pre-hospital risk assessment.
- Possibility to publish research results
