Allogeneic stem cell transplantation: from bedside to bench and back

Keywords:
leukemia autologous stem cell transplantation Allogeneic stem cell transplantation

Researchers:
prof. dr. J.J. Schuringa
dr. G.A. Huls
C.W. Goda Choi

Nature of the research:
- Database studies with clinically relevant research topics within our transplant program; - Translational research studies with patients and/or patient materials (primarily blood and bone marrow); - Basic science studies with primary cell cultures, cell lines, and (humanized) mice.

Fields of study:
immunology oncology internal medicine

Background / introduction
The UMCG Department of Hematology has a large hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) program with 80-100 autologous and 80-100 allogeneic transplantation a year. Outcome of patients with hematological malignancies have improved significantly, at least in part related to improvements in conditioning regimens and novel drugs managing toxicities.
Research question / problem definition
AIMS
1. To describe the novel approaches to clinical stem cell transplantation using the database; seek opportunities to expand the clinical work within the European network of transplant centers (EBMT).
2. To explore mechanisms involved in stem cell biology contributing to hematopoietic reconstitution after transplantation.
3. To identify key mechanisms involved in antineoplastic effects after transplantation.
Workplan
YEAR 1:
- database research and writing manuscripts with respect to clinical data (*conditioning regimens using Treosulfan; *conditioning regimens using high dose total-body irradiation in multiple myeloma patients; *identifying factors determining outcome);
- handling blood and bone marrow, working with flow cytometry, PCR, and other molecular techniques (Lab Experimental Hematology);
- based upon results: application for MD/PhD program.
