Title | Hydrochlorothiazide and the risk of skin cancer in adults with and without hypertension: a retrospective cohort study. |
---|---|
Keywords | melanoma Skin cancer hydrochlorothiazide |
Researchers |

Nature of the research | retrospective cohort study, pharmacoepidemiology, database, statistics (Cox regressie analysis) |
Fields of study | dermatology epidemiology pharmacology |
Background / introduction |
---|
Hydrochlorothiazide has recently been linked to an increased risk of skin cancer, probably due to its photosensitizing properties. Given the widespread use of thiazide diuretics, a potential skin cancer promoting effect would impose an important public health concern. As most previous studies had important methodological limitations, there is a need for more data on this topic. |
Research question / problem definition |
---|
Our aim is to investigate this association in the Lifelines cohort by creating a linkage with pharmacy (IADB) and pathological (PALGA) databases. |
Workplan |
---|
Above mentioned data sources has been linked together and form now a database; the first analyses have been performed. Some important confounders still have to be added to the model and effect of hydrochlorothiazide on the development of different skin cancer types (melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma) have to be analyzed separately. |
