Title Acute gastroenteritis: a qualitative study on parents’ expectations and experiences during general practice out-of-hours care consultations
Keywords primary care primary care, gastro-enteritis, children, out-of-hours service, pediatrics. Acute gastroenteritis

Nature of the research This qualitative study will examine motivations, expectations and experiences of parents with a child with acute gastroenteritis presenting at the out-of-hours primary care.
Fields of study GP medicine pediatrics gastroenterology
Background / introduction
Consultations rates in out-of-hours primary care (OOH-PC) are high for infectious childhood diseases including acute gastroenteritis (AGE). A childhood study about fever showed that parents were inexperienced in self-management and had a subsequent desire for reassurance, which played a role in their help seeking behavior at the OOH-PC (De Bont E. Childhood fever in out-of-hours general practice). For the childhood disease AGE, however, it is unknown why parents visit the OOH-PC with their vomiting child, what they are worried about and whether they think their child is very ill. In addition, it is unknown what they expect at the OOH-PC and what their opinion is about the regular treatment. It is important to gain insight into the motivations, expectations and experiences in order to possibly improve parental home-management and reduce the number of (re-)consultations.
Research question / problem definition
What are the motivations, expectations and experiences of parents with a child with acute gastroenteritis presenting at the out-of-hours primary care?
Workplan
Parents presenting to the OOH-PC with their vomiting child and had a diagnosis of AGE by the general practitioner will be interviewed by means of a semi-structured interview.
Based upon a review of the literature a topic list will be derived that will be incorporated in the interviews. Parents presenting with their vomiting child from 6 months to 6 years old in whom the GP diagnosed AGE will be approached for participation. These parents will be selected based on differences in number of children, age and gender of the child. Inclusion of parents will be continued until saturation is reached. Questions will be directed at parental motivations, expectations and experiences when visiting the OOH-PC. The interviews will be conducted in the parents’ home or at the OOH-PC depending on the preferences of the parents. Interviews will be audio-recorded, transcribed and analyzed by independent investigators.
