Title Long-term health-related quality of life in elderly women diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer.
Keywords ovarian cancer frailty health-related quality of life

Nature of the research clinical epidemiology
Fields of study epidemiology gynaecology geriatrics
Background / introduction
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most lethal gynaecologic malignancy and associated with high morbidity [Torre, 2015]. Most women with EOC are diagnosed after menopause. Treatment of EOC consists of a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Impairment in HRQOL after this treatment can be expected, especially in the elderly. In shared decision making, elderly patients are less willing to trade increased survival duration for reductions in HRQOL [Wedding, 2007]. This fact led the EORTC elderly task force to suggest that HRQOL might be an appropriate outcome for elderly-specific trials [Pallis, 2010]. However, to better understand HRQOL results, the course of HRQOL and the factors related to this outcome in elderly patients must be addressed.
Research question / problem definition
In a previous analysis it was found that in women 65 years and over, diagnosed with EOC, frailty and dependence are associated to reduced HRQOL. These associations remain significant when adjusted for age and stage [Nunes de Arruda F, submitted]. For this analysis, data were derived from a prospectively collected data biobank, OncoLifeS (Oncological Life Study) at the University Medical Center of Groningen. Women with a diagnosis of EOC, ≥65 years of age, with baseline assessment available from January 2016 to May 2018 were included.
Workplan
In the here proposed project we will evaluate whether frailty and dependence are also associated with long term outcomes on HRQOL. We will also use data from OncoLifeS. For this project, we are looking for an enthusiastic student, preferable an JSM student, with affinity for gynaecological oncology, elderly and epidemiology. As the project will be supervised by an epidemiologist (prof.dr. G.H. de Bock), a gynaeco-oncologist (dr. M.H.M. Oonk) and a geriatrician (dr. P. de Graeff), this is a good opportunity to improve yourself in research as well as in clinic.
